Watchmaker's Tips

Hand-wound watches

Winding is done by turning the crown clockwise. It is complete when the crown no longer turns. Watches should be wound regularly, and ideally once a day. Never wind a watch more than necessary, as the mainspring could snap.

LES AMBASSADEURS Customer Service recommends that you have your watch serviced every two years. A watch consists of many moving parts which undergo considerable strain. Having regular services can limit wear and ensure optimal precision.

Watchmaker's Tips

Quartz watches

LES AMBASSADEURS recommend that you check your watch battery every year, or according to the frequency indicated in the user manual.

Should you not wear your watch for a prolonged period, it is important to check the battery every year to be sure that it doesn't leak in the case, which could cause considerable damage.

Watchmaker's Tips

Water resistance

The water resistance of your watch is never permanent. If you use your watch under water regularly, LES AMBASSADEURS recommend that you check your watch’s water resistance at least once every two years, or even every year.

Please follow the instructions in your manual scrupulously, as water resistance differ from one model to the next. This may be indicated in metres or bars, but should not be taken too literally! Thus, water resistant to 30 metres or 3 bar is only an indication that your watch can be put in water, but not used for any kind of activity in water. In order to swim completely safely, you need a 10 bar water resistance

Whenever the battery of your watch is changed, your watch serviced or each time the case is opened, LES AMBASSADEURS Customer Service suggests having your water resistance checked.

Should you notice misting in your watch or that it has water inside it, please take it to the Customer Service immediately. The watchmaker will reinforce the water resistance or if necessary, conduct a complete overhaul.

A few precautions :

  • The joints will deteriorate more easily if exposed to sudden or extreme changes in temperature, such as the shower, or prolonged exposure to the sun followed by a dive in cold water.
  • Even if they leave no obvious trace, violent shocks can affect the functioning of your watch as well as its water resistance.
  • It is important not to pull on the crown to change the date or time in water. If the crown is pulled, water may get into the case.
  • Watches with a screw-lock crown, please ensure that the crown is perfectly screwed in prior to going in water.
  • Do not use the chronograph functions of chronograph watches in water as water may seep in via the buttons.
  • Finally, if you are often in water with your watch, we recommend that you opt for bracelets in metal or other rotproof materials, or leather straps of a quality specifically intended for diving watches.

Watchmaker's Tips

Self-winding watches

A watch with a self-winding movement winds itself up with the movement of your wrist. It is important that your watch is well positioned on your wrist, as a strap that is too loose results in a loss of autonomy.

If a watch is not worn, the power reserve will differ depending on the model and brand. Its autonomy is indicated in your user manual.

If a watch isn't worn for a period longer than its power reserve, wind it manually with the crown in order to ensure that it continues working.

Never overwind your watch as the mainspring could snap.

LES AMBASSADEURS Customer Service recommends that you have your watch serviced every two years. A watch consists of many moving parts which undergo considerable strain. Having regular services can limit wear and ensure optimal precision.

Watchmaker's Tips

Your watch and its documents

When it is not worn, your watch should be kept away from damp and light. Safeguard all original documents carefully (guarantee, certificates, invoice, user manual…), as well as accessories and spare parts. To avoid any potential inconvenience, please keep your watch and its documents in a safe place so that in the event of theft or loss, you will be able to supply any information required to your insurance or the police.

For all watches or jewellery purchased at LES AMBASSADEURS, please do not hesitate to contact the Customer Service in order to obtain an insurance certificate or a copy of the original invoice.
